The Parenting Compass: Why Smart Teens Struggle

Welcome

The Parenting Compass exists because of families like mine and the thousands of families I've had the privilege to coach over the past four decades. Every chapter has been shaped by listening, learning, and working alongside parents and their twice-exceptional (2e) teens and young adults. Above all, it is grounded in a deep belief that these young people are capable of meaningful growth when we understand how they learn, communicate, and engage with the world.

While many excellent books focus on identifying what it means to be twice-exceptional, this book focuses on what comes next. Rather than stopping at labels, I help parents recognize the specific skills their teen may be missing—from executive functioning and communication to daily living and emotional regulation—and offer practical, evidence-based strategies they can begin using immediately. That's why every chapter includes opportunities to reflect, try a new approach, and notice what changes. Throughout the book, I draw on research-supported interventions while staying grounded in one guiding principle that has shaped both my parenting and my coaching: connection first, structure second, always both. Lasting change happens when teens feel understood and supported, while also having the clear expectations and systems they need to thrive.

Everyone gets overwhelmed sometimes. Resilient people aren’t the ones who never struggle. They’re the ones who know what helps them recover. It is not about “calming down perfectly.” It’s about having options.

Remember: Mistakes don’t define you. They teach you. You don’t need to handle everything alone. Learning when—and how—to use support is a life skill.

Resilience is not something you force into your teen. It grows when you stay steady and curious, and step back gradually.
